HISTORIC COLLECTION RETURNS TO HERRETT CENTER FOR ARTS & SCIENCE ART GALLERY
TWIN FALLS, ID - The Heyburn Collection is once again on display at the Herrett Center for Arts and Science in the museum’s Jean B. King Gallery.
In 1933, Superintendent J.M. Whiting of the Heyburn School District began an art show at the school. Each Spring, the school district would host a free art show for the public. At one point, the exhibit saw over 2,000 visitors in a two-week period. When the school districts consolidated to create Minico High School, the yearly exhibit ended.
Throughout his tenure, Whiting worked closely with students and professional painter Olaf Moller to purchase pieces. Students would collect change throughout the year to afford the fine art. Nearly 50 pieces were amassed, reflecting the work of artists from around the United States. The pieces collected by Moller, Whiting, and students became one of the finest art collections in the state. This collection was then featured in the hallways of the Heyburn Junior High School.
In 2010, the Heyburn Alumni Association offered the collection to the Herrett Center to become the exhibit’s permanent home. This move ensured that Superintendent Whiting’s vision would carry on while staying close to home in southern Idaho.
The Heyburn Collection will be on display at the Herrett Center through April 12, 2025.
The Herrett Center galleries are free to the public. Please visit: herrett.csi.edu for hours of operation.
